Spirit of Haida Gwaii
Small Island

This documentary offers an intimate portrait of Haida artist Bill Reid and provides a living record of the toil that lies behind his 20 foot, 7 ton bronze masterpiece entitled Spirit of Haida Gwaii.

The documentary showcases the creation of the piece, beginning as a 1⁄6-scale clay model and years later translated to its full-size clay iteration. In 1991, this model travelled from Vancouver, B.C. to the Tallix Foundry in upper state New York where it was cast in bronze, becoming The Spirit of Haida Gwaii: the Black Canoe we know today.

The sculpture went on to become the centrepiece of the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C., while its likeness came to adorn a 1996 stamp and, most notably, the $20 dollar bill as of 2012.

Throughout the film, Haida mythical creatures are shown, most notably in an animated sequence featuring Haida art created by the National Film Board.

The film travels from the rugged solitude of Haida Gwaii to the gala installation in Washington D.C., and allows the audience to glimpse visionary and acclaimed Northwest Coast artist, Bill Reid in his glory.

A Multicultural Documentary on Family Violence

They recount idyllic pairings, followed by patterns of violence and then, hope-inducing narratives of life after leaving. Behind Closed Doors is a personal, candid and inspiring account of resilience and hope, breaking the silence.
